Carpets come in a surprising array of styles and types, all manufactured a little differently to provide benefits and features specific to a range of installations, uses and requirements.

Worldwide there are hundreds or maybe even thousands of different carpet types and styles, however, many of these tend to achieve the same thing with just minor differences in construction, so most of the carpets you find in the UK divide into two main areas; tufted carpets and woven carpets.

Tufted carpets

Tufted carpets are made by punching yarn through a woven backing with needles, then applying a secondary backing to keep them in place; tufting machines are basically big sewing machines! This is a very quick method of manufacture offering a range of textures and patterns using any yarn type and staying very cost effective.

Tufted carpets can either be loop pile which looks similar to natural carpets and can be problematic for clawed pets! Alternatively cut pile offers impressive durability with a thick, cushioned feel which makes it ideal for high traffic areas of the home or in low traffic offices. Cut and loop piles can be mixed to create a dense, layered carpet very good at hiding dirt and footprints, maximising the benefits of each pile type.

Woven carpets

Woven carpets are made in the traditional way for the highest quality standards in brands like Ulster, Axminster and Wilton. A labour intensive method using a loom that weaves the front and back of the carpet there is a colossal potential for patterns and colours and they retain a dense and soft look and feel for many years with just a little regular carpet care.

Choosing a fibre type

Of course these different methods of construction for new carpets can still vary depending on the type of fibre used to create them. Wool is still considered the best of all and is recommended to be used as a mix with every other carpet fibre. Naturally flame retardant with a low propensity to soil, good appearance retention, durability, easy maintenance and absolute sustainability in its production.

Wool can be expensive so a range of man made fibres are used mixed with it or on their own to make carpets more cost effective or to boost certain features. Nylon is designed for durability and general easy maintenance, polypropelene is highly stain resistant and polyester has a particularly lustrous appearance.
